In case you missed this grand festival moment in 2018: Mark Ernestus’ Ndagga Rhythm Force is back! Born when the acclaimed German DJ and producer—also the man behind Hard Wax and one half of Basic Channel—travelled through Senegal, the Ndagga Rhythm Force blends the rhythmic intensity of mbalax music with minimalist, dub- and reverb-heavy techno. The ensemble features sabar drummers and vocalists, who, in a live setting, converse directly with Ernestus’s electronic production. It’s a sound that can be heard on the 2016 album ‘Yermande’ and on their upcoming record—the first Rhythm Force release in nearly a decade—but it’s a force that should mostly be felt in the flesh.
